About The Ophthalmology Survival Guide

The examination of the eye, its adnexa, and the visual system requires a complex yet vital skill set for the eye care professional, as well as anyone else who is called to evaluate or triage patients. Acquiring and utilizing the requisite knowledge and skills may seem a somewhat daunting responsibility at the outset, but it represents a truly extraordinary opportunity as well.

Our Mission

The intent of this book and atlas is to create an easy-to-use resource to make your life simpler and less stressful. This survival guide is the result.

Whether you are beginning your formal training in ophthalmology, or you’re a non-ophthalmologist involved in direct patient care (e.g. medical student, primary care and emergency physician, nurse or nurse practitioner, physician assistant, ophthalmic technician, orthoptist), this guide will help to familiarize you with important, useful, and fundamental aspects of the ophthalmic examination and patient management.

The learning goals will be accomplished in several ways:

  • Easy-to-understand explanations and discussions

  • Breaking things down into smaller parts for easier consideration

  • Audiovisual content

As your personal experience grows you may choose to modify your ophthalmic examination techniques to better suit your working situation, or find ways to make the examination even more accurate and efficient. This survival guide should therefore be viewed as an important starting point, not as a strict set of immutable instructions. As always, your dedicated effort to understand the principles and practice of the essential skills will be rewarded with greater confidence and expertise, resulting in improved patient care, less stress, and greater satisfaction.

But early on the learning curve is steep and survival is key!
